This sock pattern is a very simple adaptation of beautiful rib-lace pattern from Japanese stitchionary to a fitting and flattering lightweight basic sock. The pattern looks pretty complicated – but it really isn’t. The detailed surface is formed by simple little lace squares separated by narrow twisted stitch rib bands, after one vertical repeat the patterns are offset so that those ribs and laces align nicely and form almost organic surface. These socks are not bulky, so you can easily use them with some pretty shoes!
When I first saw the pattern stitch I thought about knitting the socks from toe to top. The lace motif of the pattern is heart shaped and knitted in that direction you can really see it. But after I finished the swatch I end up turning it around – and somehow I end up liking the more abstract “upside down” version of the pattern more. So I started the socks from the top.
There are not much details in this sock. Reinforced heel stitch continue the vertical lines of the pattern. The heel is well fitting v-turn heel and the toe is xxx.
The size will fit well to shoe sizes 38-39 (US 7 1/2 – 8 1/2, UK 5-6). The rib pattern is very stretchy, so you can extend the length of the sock for 0,5-1 pattern repeats for larger socks without modifying the gauge or stitch count, or shorten it a bit for smaller sock. The leg length is 15 cm and leg circumference 19 cm (not stretched)po – and oh yes, it stretches so well that even sturdier calves should feel themselves comfortable in these socks!
You need
Fingering weight sock yarn (yarn used: Araucania Ranco in colour #104 – Forest)
2,5 mm needles (or size to obtain the desired gauge): DPN:s, long or short circulars depending on your taste for sock knitting. This pattern is kind for all techniques.
A blunt point needle for grafting and/or weaving in the ends.
Gauge
30 sts and 44 rounds of stocking stitch for 10 cm – but naturally you can modify the gauge to get larger or smaller socks.
